Dr. Joel Williams' journey into medicine began with the inspiration of his parents, who worked in orthodontics. As he grew up, he became interested in musculoskeletal medicine and decided to go to medical school.
Dr. Williams pursued his medical education at the prestigious Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. During his time there, he received the Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship, dedicating a year to fundamental science research. Following this, he completed his orthopedic surgery residency at UC Davis in Sacramento, California.
During his residency, Dr. Williams engaged in a research fellowship where he successfully secured multiple grants. Notably, he received funding from the Orthopaedic Trauma Association to study fracture healing. His significant research contributions have earned him multiple awards, including honors for the best paper at three different conferences.
After completing his residency, he further specialized in orthopedic surgery by undertaking two fellowships. The first fellowship was in orthopedic trauma at UC Davis, where he focused on treating fractures of the hip, pelvis, and leg, as well as on techniques for osteotomy and leg realignment. His second fellowship, dedicated to hip surgery, took place in Seattle, Washington, where he concentrated on advanced hip procedures. Through these experiences, Dr. Williams has established himself as an expert in orthopedic surgery and trauma care.
Dr. Williams is a dedicated member of the academic communities focused on hip and orthopedic trauma. He actively participates in several organizations, including AO Trauma North America, the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, the Anterior Hip Foundation, and the AOA.
He has delivered numerous lectures and presentations at local, national, and international events throughout his career. He has also contributed to many prestigious medical journals through his published research.
