Hip joint injections involve injecting medicine directly into the hip joint to diagnose the source of pain or treat pain due to conditions such as arthritis, injury or mechanical stress of the hip joint. Hip pain may be experienced in the hip, buttock, leg or low back.

Learn moreThe words “Periacetabular osteotomy” (PAO) simply translate to cutting the bone around the acetabulum (hip socket). A PAO is a surgical procedure developed to correct hip socket (acetabulum) deficiencies by repositioning it (osteotomy). It is most commonly utilized to address developmental dysplasia of the hip in the skeletally mature individual. The goal of the procedure is to separate the socket from the surrounding pelvis by a series of carefully controlled cuts and rotating it into a better position.
Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a condition where the hip bones are abnormally shaped and the ball (femur or thigh bone head) and socket (acetabulum) joint of the hip bones rub against each other due to abnormal contact.
Direct anterior approach hip replacement is a surgical procedure that has gained worldwide acceptance as an alternative technique to standard posterior hip replacement. At present, a conservative estimate is that 30% of surgeons are now utilizing this technique for hip replacement.
A procedure called a surgical hip dislocation may be performed if the ball has a small lesion commonly caused by trauma or avascular necrosis (AVN or osteonecrosis). The procedure allows full access to the hip for transplantation of bone and cartilage from an organ donor. Additionally, it allows for labral repair and reshaping of impingement lesions. If the ball lesion is too large or if the cartilage damage is too widespread, a hip replacement might be recommended instead.
The pelvis is the foundation of the body. The pelvis serves as the floor for the abdominal cavity and the “basin” that holds the reproductive organs, vital visceral structures such as the bowel and bladder, large blood vessels, and nerves that connect the body to the legs. The pelvis forms a ring comprised of three bones: the sacrum, and the right and left innominate bones. The ring-like structure serves as the connection of the hip joints to the lumbar spine.
The normal hip is a “ball and socket” type joint. The ball is called the femoral head, the socket is called the acetabulum. The normal movement of the hip depends upon the two surfaces fitting precisely together. The two surfaces are coated with cartilage which is a very low friction surface that is smoother than even the best man made surfaces.
